Vaccinations for adults

General Recommendations

All adults are recommended to update their vaccinations against tetanus, pertussis, and diphtheria every 10 years.

Combined Vaccines

The simplest approach is using combined vaccines. For example, a single injection can prevent diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis using a three-component vaccine.

Travel Vaccinations

When traveling to regions with infection risks, the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute recommends revaccination with a four-component vaccine that includes protection against poliomyelitis.

Measles Vaccination

Measles vaccination is recommended for all adults born after 1970 with unclear vaccination status, no vaccination history, or only one vaccination in childhood. It is preferable to use the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Vaccinations for People Over 60

For all individuals over 60 years of age, STIKO recommends vaccination against influenza and pneumococcal infections.

Risk Groups

Individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus, chronic lung or heart diseases, people with compromised immune systems, and elderly individuals should receive vaccinations against influenza and pneumococcal infections.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) Vaccination

The most reliable protection against tick-borne encephalitis is vaccination.

Primary Vaccination

Three injections are required to develop lasting immunity:

  1. First – according to the standard schedule
  2. Second – 1-3 months after the first
  3. Third – 5-12 months after the second (depending on the vaccine)

Booster Vaccination

After completing primary vaccination in Germany, TBE booster vaccination is recommended after 3 years, and then every 5 years to maintain protection.
